Bainbridge-Guilford 41, Unadilla Valley 32
NEW BERLIN – Bainbridge-Guilford got off to a big start, but needed to survive a furious Unadilla Valley rally to move to 3-0 on the season Saturday afternoon.
Jake Mazzarella ran for 262 yards and two scores, his last TD in the fourth quarter opened a nine-point lead.
“They really didn’t have many answers (for Jake),” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Things were going their way, but we were just able to grind it out (with Jake). He was the great equalizer.”
B-G scored on its first four possessions – all in the first quarter – in what gave clear indication of a potential blowout for the Bobcats. Corbin Palmer had a TD run and a TD pass to Mike Carlin, Mazzarella scored his first TD, and Justin Cirigliano ran for a score – his first TD this season.
The only answer for UV was Justin Hofer’s 75-yard kickoff return for a score that made in 7-6. “They just blew us away in the first quarter,” said UV coach Daryl Decker. “They were playing football, and it was like we were still in pregrame.”
Decker simplified his team’s offensive package, the defense made a couple of stops, and a comeback quickly ensued.
Kurt Haycook threw TD passes of one and 38 yards to Hofer, and Kody Homann added a 13-yard TD rush as the margin closed to 27-25 at the end of three quarters.
B-G, scoreless for two periods, resumed its efficient ground attack with Palmer scoring on a one-yard keeper.
That TD was quickly answered when Haycook scrambled for a 44-yard TD drawing UV back within two, 41-32.
At last, a steady dose of Mazzarella settled things down for the Bobcats, who added the final score in the latter stages of the fourth. “We were up big on Delhi last week and weren’t able to put them away,” Mattingly said. “For some reason, we have not had that killer instinct, and you can’t allow teams to hang in there. Certainly, you have to tip your hat to Unadilla Valley. They didn’t quit, and they definitely could have.”
Homann ran for a team-best 143 yards and Haycook threw for 133 yards on 11 of 20 attempts.
“I was mad at the start, but was happy with the way we finished the game,” Decker said. “The last 2 ½ quarters was a big step forward for us, and something I hope will carry forward the rest of the season. The unfortunate thing is that both of our losses were division games. That puts us in a bad spot.”

Greene 34, Dryden 0
DRYDEN – Not even gusting winds of 60 miles per hour or rampant lightning could slow the Greene attack.
The Trojans ran for a season-high 393 yards, while the defense recorded its second shutout this season and fifth shutout over the last 13 games.
In addition to the winds, strikes of lightning extended the halftime session to 30 minutes. After the delay, the Trojans performed just as well – if not better – than the first half when it built a 16-0 lead.
“We had three drives of eight plays or more, and one scoring drive of 90 yards,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “Those are huge – when you hold on to the football and grind it out.”
Quarterback Joe Beckwith scored on runs of 14 and one yard in the first half. Mike Beckwith, Joel Roselle, and Dan Treadwell completed drives in the second half with scoring jaunts. Mike Beckwith had 125 yards on the ground, and Treadwell finished with 114.
Greene moves into division play this Friday when it hosts rival Chenango Forks. “We looked at those first three games as our preseason,” Paske said. “Now we start our division games, and one of our stated goals was to win the division. Forks is coming to our place this week, and we’re excited for the challenge.”
