Smith, down to his last strike with a 1-2 count, connected on a fastball that richocheted over the outfielder’s head for the easy round-tripper. Smith also pitched four innings of relief to earn the victory.

“Brett really carried us with his bat and his pitching, plus I felt we played some pretty decent defense from the mid innings and on,” said UV coach Gary Alford. “The boys never gave in.”

Hancock led 5-0 after two innings scoring on five basehits and two walks.

UV jumped back into the game scoring five runs in the fifth. Jesse Ranger had a two-run single, Kurt Haycook added an RBI, and Smith scored Haycook with a sacrifice fly.

Oxford 13, Harpursville 10

HARPURSVILLE – Oxford completed a perfect 3-0 week and nudged its way back to the .500 mark rallying to beat Harpursville Thursday afternoon.

Adam Pierson’s RBI single scored Matt Moore with the tying run in the seventh. Andrew Golden followed with a two-run single, and Eric Dilfer added insurance with an RBI.

Nate Head pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the victory for Oxford (4-4), who finished with 15 hits and has raised its team batting average well over 50 points this week. “To be honest, I think we were hitting below our talent level early in the season, and we saw some good pitching,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “We’re not striking out as much, and by putting it in play, we’re giving ourselves more chances.”

Deposit 9, B-G 4

BAINBRIDGE - Deposit willingly accepted Bainbridge-Guilford’s charity en route to road victory Thursday.

The Lumberjacks drew 10 walks from three separate B-G pitchers, and five of those baserunners came in to score. Over the first two innings, four of the five runs scored by Deposit came after the baserunners were issued walks. “I knew coming in to the season that we were kind of inexperienced with our pitching, and it showed tonight,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly.

Evan Thomas was 3-for-5 with two RBI for Deposit, and Derek Lenio picked up the win. Unlike his pitching counterparts, Lenio did not issue a walk.

B-G’s Corbin Palmer had two hits including a solo home run, and Billy Holden was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
