Marauders Blank Morrisville-Eaton For First Win

Sherburne-Earlville 18, Morrisville-Eaton 0 (5 innings)

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville scored in every inning in shutting out Morrisville-Eaton Wednesday.

S-E junior Matt Smith faced one batter over the minimum striking out 11 in five innings, walking none, and allowing just one single. “Matt is throwing it really well right now, and obviously we hit the heck out of the ball today,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks.

Jake Bohnert, Mike Wilson, and Dave Sulton all had three hits for S-E, who finished with 17 hits in just four innings worth of at-bats.

Owego 27, Norwich 3

NORWICH – Norwich struggled to contain Owego’s batters all game giving up 27 hits in blowout defeat Wednesday at Veterans Park.

Owego, playing its season opener, scored early and often building a 13-2 lead after three innings to support winning pitcher Devin Bensley. Bensley also had a big day at the plate with five hits, and six RBI. Stephen Yanchus had two triples, and Matt Francis homered.

Colby Griffin was 2-for-3 to lead Norwich.

Unatego 12, Oxford 2

OTEGO – Unatego scored eight of its runs over the fifth and sixth innings capitalizing on seven Oxford base on balls in Wednesday’s victory over the Blackhawks.

Dan Shelton fanned 11 Oxford hitters over five innings to earn the victory, and the Unatego staff had 15 strikeouts in the contest. Shelton also had two hits, one a double, finishing with two RBI. “We struck out 15 times, we walked 10 batters, and had four errors. That is not a recipe for success,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer.

Adam Pierson went 3-for-4 to lead Oxford. Ryan Moore and Andrew Golden drove in runs for Oxford in a two-run first inning.

The Blackhawks (0-2) play at Delhi today.

Oxford 20, Unatego 1 (6 innings)

OTEGO – Oxford won its second lopsided final of the week blowing out an overmatched Unatego squad Wednesday.

Jacquelyn Heggie drove in three runs, while Jessica Frank, Julianne Heggie, Meg Golden, and Lacey Barry drove in two runs apiece.

The Blackhawks drew 16 walks from two Unatego pitchers to extend its margin over the final three innings. Jacquelyn Heggie allowed four hits for her second win striking out 15 and walking just one.

Oxford has outscored its two opponents this season by a combined 32-2.

Greene 6, Deposit 1

GREENE – Defending Midstate Athletic Conference champion Greene pulled away from Deposit in the later innings to notch an opening-game victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Taylor Ellis went 3-for-4, and Natalie Greene had a two-run double in the three-run fifth to help expand the Trojans’ lead to four runs. Rebecca Hanrahan put Greene on the board with a solo homer in the third, and finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

“We really didn’t start stringing hits together until the fifth inning,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “Deposit has a young team, but they’re solid. They played really well.”

Hanrahan earned the victory registering seven strikeouts and allowing five Deposit hits. Smith was happy with his defense and its 14 put-outs. “We have some young players in spots, and we had a couple kids out of the lineup due to illness, but we played really well in the field,” the Greene coach said.

The Trojans play at Harpursville today.

Unadilla Valley 11, Edmeston 6

EDMESTON – UV eighth-grader Jackie Smith picked up her first varsity win, and Smith’s cousin Megan Smith hit a solo homer and drove in two runs as the Storm evened their mark at 1-1 on the season.

Jordan Anderson led UV with a 3-for-4 day and three runs, Amanda Leech added two hits and two RBI, and Brittany Fairchild drove in two runs.

“Coming off (the loss) last night, today was almost a must-win in terms of confidence,” said UV coach Eileen Lawyer. “The kids bounced back strong. We got the bats going and we ran the bases well.”

Smith finished with nine strikeouts and two walks in scattering nine hits.

Tuesday, UV managed just two hits in dropping an 8-6 game to Walton. The Storm are idle until an April 16 road date with Unatego.
