Norwich 40, Chenango Valley 39
NORWICH – The tone of the match was set with Frank Garcia’s exciting 132-pound victory over CV standout Dustin Greene. The Tornado jumped out to a big lead early on, and held off the Warriors for their ninth straight dual meet win Wednesday.
Tristan Rifanburg’s pin at 120 pounds cinched up Norwich’s victory over a Chenango Valley club that is ranked among the top four dual meet teams in Section IV.
“There were a lot of real close matches, and it could have gone either way,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “Chenango Valley is a quality team that has good kids at every weight. Frankie’s win was a heck of a way to start the dual.”
Garcia was matching up with Greene, who was a New York State tournament competitor a season ago. In a scoreless match, Garcia recorded a reversal in the third period, and held Greene the rest of the way for a 2-0 win.
Norwich picked up 19 straight points beginning with Anthony Vitello’s impressive 8-0 win over the Warriors’ Joel Grychewicz at 160 pounds. “Anthony is consistently coming through for us,” Downey said. “He not only got us a win, but it was a major decision. That extra team point helped us win the match.”
Tanner Cummings, typically a 152-pounder, weighed in at 160 and was bumped to 170 pounds. Cummings, battling a shoulder injury, held on for a 9-8 victory over Dylan Mosher. Cody Bradbury (182) and Kegan Levesque (195) picked up forfeits to lift Norwich’s lead to 28-11.
Chenango Valley lost a costly team point – and six dual meet points for losing the bout – when the Tornado’s John Marvin (145) was awarded a disqualification win over Noah Ruston. The matchup ended with six seconds left in the third period and Marvin trailing on the scoreboard.
“We’re really on a roll right now,” Downey said. “The team is jelling and clicking, and we’re looking forward to the Ilion Tournament this weekend. The guys are all wrestling well right now, and we’re proud of what we are seeing.”

Sherburne-Earlville 68, Mount Markham 52
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s bench gave it a big lift, especially in the second half, as the Marauders shook the Mustangs midway through the third quarter, and coasted to a home victory Wednesday evening.
The Marauders had five three-point plays in the third quarter – three on three-pointers and two on traditional three-point plays – to extend a 30-28 lead early in the quarter to 50-37.
Paul Romanenko buried two of his four trifectas in the contest, Austin Jasper and Jesse Yerton had three-point plays, and Yerton took a skip pass from Carter Cole, and drained a three ball upping the S-E lead to 48-35 wth one minute left in the third.
The tide of the contest swung with the Marauders’ reserves on the floor, and all five starters sat the entirety of the final quarter. Jasper, a reserve forward, scored eight of his game-high 17 points in the last quarter. Romanenko finished with 12, and Yerton had 11 off the bench. In all, 41 of the Marauders’ points came from bench players.
“You could see in the fourth quarter, with our depth, we were able to wear them down,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We have a lot of kids that can make plays for us. It’s a nice dilemma to have.”
Mount Markham took a 20-19 lead with 4:12 left in the second quarter on a Josh Diehl bucket. The Mustangs did not score the rest of the first half, and were induced into back-to-back 35-second clock violations.
Mick Khoury’s three-point play with 3:07 left in the first half gave S-E the lead for good, and Romanenko pumped in a three for the 25-20 halftime lead.
