Norwich 52, Vestal 46 (OT)
JOHNSON CITY – A stunning comeback in the final minute allowed Norwich to force overtime, and from there, the Tornado dominated Vestal in the extra period to win Wednesday’s contest in the Pete Hyde Coaches Versus Cancer Classic.
Norwich trailed the Golden Bears by five when Jennifer Borfitz dished to Hailey Dietrich for a layup paring the deficit to three. Following a defensive stop, Norwich set up for a two-point basket with the intent of immediately fouling Vestal after the made basket.
A loose ball was knocked out of bounds with 13 seconds left forcing Norwich to attempt a three-pointer for the tie. Bryn Loomis came off a double screen, and buried the tying three ball from a foot beyond the top of the key.
Early in the overtime session, Borfitz scored on a layup, and Loomis completed a three-point play to establish a five-point advantage. “We played Union-Endicott really tough the night before, and Vestal was no slouch tonight,” said Norwich coach Josh Borfitz. “I think this whole tournament was a big confidence boost for us.”
Loomis scored 18 points to lead Norwich, Borfitz tossed in 13, and Dietrich had nine. Norwich is idle until next Friday when it visits Windsor.
