Sauquoit Valley 5, Sherburne-Earlville 0

SAUQUOIT – It was a strange feeling for S-E coach Kylie Davis, who felt her team played well despite the five-goal deficit Saturday against Sauquoit Valley.

“I thought we dominated a lot of the first half, they just capitalized on our defensive mistakes,” Davis said.

Elisa Marchione scored three times for SV and Kelly Brennan had two goals and two assists. Sauquoit built a three-goal halftime lead, and never looked back. “I was pleased with much of our play, but it was a frustrating game overall to coach,” Davis said. “I see the passion in the girls, so I know this coming week we’ll be ready to redeem ourselves.”

S-E (6-6-1) hosts Mount Markham today.

Field Hockey

Greene 3, Maine-Endwell 2

GREENE – Coming off a shutout win over Whitney Point Thursday to reach the finals of the 3rd Annual Barrows/Bromley Field Hockey Tournament, an early second-half goal gave the Trojans (12-0) a 3-1 lead, and that goal provided the margin of victory over the Spartans Saturday evening.

Caitlyn Gorton, up from her defensive position, grabbed a rebound after the initial save, and reverse-sticked the ball into the cage 41 seconds into the half making it 3-1. Maine-Endwell controlled the action most of the second half, but fell short in its comeback. “They pressured us a lot, and we had a tough time generating offense in the second half,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “Our defense played really well, and Emily Conroe stopped pretty much every ball they tried to get through.”

Greene traded goals with M-E in the first half taking a 1-0 lead on Jahna Driscoll’s goal, and breaking a 1-1 tie when Brandee Schoonmaker picked up a loose ball near the right post, and knocked the ball in.

Gorton, Driscoll, Conroe, and Emma Anderson were Greene’s selections to the all-tournament team. The Trojans play at Vestal Tuesday.

Boys’ Soccer

Greene 8, Oxford 0

OXFORD – Greene’s Alex Driscoll scored four goals to become his school’s all-time leading scorer in a shutout win over Oxford. The contest was a rematch of the Oxford tourney final last month when the Trojans eked out a 4-3 title win.

Before Driscoll’s scoring barrage, he assisted teammate Corey Dietrich on the opening tally of the game. “What I like most about Driscoll is his patience,” said Oxford coach Jim Champlin. “You can tell his brain is firing whenever he has the ball. His crossing pass to Dietrich was the best assist I’ve seen all season.”

Driscoll’s four goals gives him 104 for his career. The previous record-holder, Jordan McMullen, had 101 tallies over his career. Alex Leone scored late in the game for the Trojans, and he added three assists.
