Strong second half not enough for Tornado boys

Boys’ Soccer

Owego 5, Norwich 2

OWEGO – Norwich picked up its offensive play in the second half, but that was not enough to overcome Owego’s three-goal halftime edge in Monday’s STAC contest.

Aaron Francis scored a pair of goals to lead the Owego attack.

Billy Whaley tallied twice in the second half for Norwich getting assists from Ricky Finnegan and Curtis Woodard. Tornado goalie, Julian Gillner, made 18 saves. “Julian kept us in the game again,” said Norwich coach Steve Prime. “He was on fire tonight.”

COPES CORNERS – Franklin won an offensive shootout at G-MU Monday afternoon as the Raiders were playing their first game in nine days.

Alex Brownell had a hat trick for the Purple Devils, two of his goals coming in the second half. “We didn’t play well defensively. I don’t know if it was the week off, but we were just flat,” said G-MU coach Mark Luettger. “It was something I was worried about, and I take responsibility for that. Congratulations to Franklin, they played well offensively.”

Greg Delaney had a career game for the Raiders. The senior G-MU player had four goals on the day – two in each half.

Girls’ Soccer

G-MU 6, Franklin 0

FRANKLIN – G-MU’s offense was in high gear, and the defense was in clamp-down mode in Monday shutout of Franklin.

Miranda Hill scored the final two goals of a four-goal first half for the Raiders, and Hill added a third goal in the second half. Defensively, Whitney Gilbert was assigned the task of marking Franklin’s top scorer, Jordan Beers. Beers was limited to just three shots in the game, and never seriously threatened to score. “Whitney played a phenomenal game, and totally took away (Jordan’s) offense,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole. “No else was scoring without Jordan setting them up.”

G-MU’s Lauren Hill opened the scoring nine minutes into the game, and Taylor Nichols added a goal five minutes later. Kali Murphy scored when her direct kick rebounded off a Franklin defender.

The Raiders (5-4-1) host Edmeston Wednesday.

Sherburne-Earlville 4, Canastota 0

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s retooled lineup had little trouble with Canastota Monday in a shutout win.

The Marauders Brianna Vibbard had a hat trick and Sarah Cole netted S-E’s other goal. Overall, S-E held a 28-6 advantage in shots on goal, a number more impressive due to the number of injuries that have taken S-E starters out of action. “The girls are adjusting well to the new changes in our formation,” said S-E coach Kylie Davis.

S-E plays at Sauquoit Valley Wednesday.

Eight minutes later, Driscoll fed Emily Gascon for the tally. “We pretty much controlled play, but Windsor was tough in the circle and they kind of packed it in,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin.
