Sixteen Indicted By Chenango Grand Jury

NORWICH – Sixteen individuals were indicted by the Chenango County grand jury when they convened in June and July.

During the proceeding, the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office presents evidence against those it wishes to prosecute. In each instance, it is up to the grand jury to decide if there is reasonable cause to charge that person with a felony level offense.

Those indicted by the grand jury are arraigned before the county or Supreme Court judge at a later date.

Six individuals were also indicted by the Chenango County grand jury when it convened on June 15. A total of 17 felonies and an handful of lesser charges were filed against the defendants.

• Gary G. Beardsley, 31, Harpursville, was indicted on charges of third degree burglary and second degree criminal mischief, both class D felonies, and fourth degree grand larceny, a class E felony. The charges stem from an incident which took place in the Town of Coventry on April 6, where Beardsley and another person allegedly entered a seasonal residence and stole approximately $1,000 worth of copper, aluminum and brass. In the process, they reportedly intentionally caused $19,783 in damage to the property.

On a separate three-count indictment, Beardsley was also indicted on charges of third degree burglary, second degree criminal mischief and third degree grand larceny, all class D felonies. The charges concern an incident which allegedly took place on April 9 in the Town of Guilford, where Beardsley and another person broke into a home and stole copper pipe and a radiator. The value of the property damaged and/or stolen is estimated at $36,000.

• Jeffrey H. C. Dugon, 25, Windsor was indicted on two counts of second degree burglary, class C felonies, and two counts of petit larceny, class A misdemeanors. Dugon allegedly entered two Village of Afton residences in the early morning hours of April 29, stealing $20 in cash from one and a Wii game system, Wii Fit game and boxes of Schwann Food from the other.

• Robert C. Corbin, Jr., 39, Norwich, was indicted on charges of second degree burglary and second degree aggravated sex abuse, class C felonies, as well as second degree assault, a class D felony. According to indictment, on the night of May 21, Corbin forced his way into a hotel room at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Norwich. He allegedly beat the female occupant of the room, with whom he had a prior relationship, with a curtain rod and sexually assaulted her. Corbin is currently held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

• Curissa M. Jenkins, 23, Norwich, was indicted on two counts of second degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, class B felonies in connection with an incident which took place on April 7 in the Rexford Street Trailer Park in the City of Norwich. According to the indictment, Jenkins allegedly had 19 individual glassine wrappers of heroin and 10 individual knotted bags of cocaine in her possession, which she intended to sell, at the time of her arrest.

• Gary W. Florence, 65, Harpursville, was indicted for first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated, all class E felonies. Florence was arrested on May 21 following a traffic stop on state Hwy 235 in the Town of Afton. According to the indictment, he had a blood alcohol content of .14 of 1 percent at the time of his arrest. He was also allegedly found to be driving knowingly without a valid New York State driver’s license. Florence has two previous alcohol-related convictions; one for driving while ability impaired by alcohol in 2008 in the Village of Greene, the other for DWI in August of 2010 in the Town of Coventry.

• Michael J. Mathis, 25, was indicted for third degree grand larceny, a class D felony. The charge stems from an incident on September 27 in the Town of Smyrna, where Mathis allegedly stole $5,150 worth of copper pipe from a residence on Boos-Law-Ford Road.

On July 13, a total of 17 felonies and a handful of lesser charges were filed against ten defendants.
