NORWICH – Norwich’s boys made it a perfect 6-for-6 at the annual REK Invitational Friday night. The host team broke five meet records, and breezed to the team title scoring 161 points. B-G/Afton, competing in the NHS-hosted invite for the first time, was a distant second with 129.
“The weather wasn’t perfect, but we’ve had worse this season,” said Norwich boys’ coach, Paul Sims. “Every year, my kids get pumped up for this meet. It’s a big deal to a lot of the kids.”
The Tornado boys kept a stranglehold on the title behind top male performer Matt Murray, who set new meet records in winning the 400-meter dash (51.4) and 800-meter middle distance race (2:05). Murray added a leg in the record-breaking 3,200-meter relay (8:42.5) and was one-fourth of the victorious 1,600-meter relay (3:36.2).
Norwich senior Jon Foulds swiped titles in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles. He won the former in a record 15.5 seconds, and added a time of 1:00.3. Patrick Taylor continued his excellent season in the jumping events. Taylor, an NHS junior, garnered wins in the long jump (19-7) and triple jump (39-5). Taylor was also part of a record-breaking relay. He teamed up with Cameron Turner, Nate Ashton, and Morgan Crawford to nail down the 400-meter relay in 45.2 seconds.
Oxford’s Katie and Emily Woodford shared the most outstanding female performer award for the second time in three years, and teammate Haley Witchella made a splash in her first REK Invitational setting a meet record in the high jump (5-feet), but it was not enough to overcome B-G/Afton’s significant depth. The Bears racked up 128 points with Oxford winding up second (82).
Katie Woodford claimed firsts in the 100- and 400-meter races, while twin sister Emily set a meet record taking the 200 meters (26.2). Emily Woodford also notched a victory in the triple jump.
B-G/Afton eighth-grader, Julia Knapp, staked her claim as one of the most promising performers in the section. Knapp won the 400-meter hurdles in a new meet record time (1:09.2), and Knapp doubled up in the long jump with a first-place leap of 16-6 1/2. The Bears’ Jess Avery added a record in the pole vault clearing nine feet even.
“I think Chenango County will be well represented in Section IV this year,” Sims said summing up the meet. “There were a number of kids here that have legitimate shots at going to states.”
Norwich will host Owego Tuesday in a STAC Central Division meet.

Greene wins tournament
ENDWELL – Greene jumped out to an early lead in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Saturday, and survived a shaky sixth inning to prevail over Susquehanna Valley, 7-5, in the finals.
Winning pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan hit a two-run homer in the third scoring Taylor Ellis. Ellis was a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI. Brittany Youngs had two hits and drove in two runs, and Hanrahan was 2-for-3 in addition to a seven-strikeout performance.
Sus Valley took advantage of a Greene error in the sixth to extend the inning, and Trisha Gaska delivered a timely two-run single. “This was a very important weekend for us regarding sectional playoff points,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We’re on a pretty good roll right now, and I hope the weather continues to hold off.”
In the first game, Greene advanced to the championship game blanking Oneonta, 5-0. Hanrahan had seven strikeouts and no walks in tossing a six-hitter. Caitlin Willis went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the Trojans’ three-run sixth. Ellis started her 6-for-7 weekend with two hits in three at-bats. “This was a real nice win for us, especially not having any practice or a game Friday due to the poor weather,” Smith said.
