NORWICH – Norwich extended its unbeaten streak to five games taking command of Thursday’s game against Chenango Forks in the third inning.

The Tornado (4-1-1) scored five times in the third to grab a 6-2 lead, then tacked on a pair of three-run frames over the next two innings. “It was cold out today, but our bats were warm,” said Norwich coach John Martison. “We played relaxed and confident. This was a good league win.”

Nick McCullough and Brendan McInerney, the one and two hitters for Norwich, consistently reached base with each drawing a pair of walks. Number three hitter, Colby Griffin, finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Cleanup hitter, Mackay Hotaling, was a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. “We had guys on base all game and we were hitting hit hard,” Martinson said. “Our top two guys in the lineup were getting on base, and our three and four hitters came through.”

Mason Dean went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a two-run double in the second inning. Oxford finished with nine errors in the game. “We looked like a team that hadn’t played in two weeks,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “The big difference in the game was the error column. We made nine errors, and they only made one.”

NEW BERLIN – Sidney pitcher Andy Kozak confounded UV’s bats, and helped himself at the plate with three hits in Thursday’s road victory.

Kozak, and little brother Billy Kozak, each went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. On the mound, Andy Kozak struck out 12 and walked two in a complete-game win.

“Kozak throws hard, it was a cold night...he looked real good tonight and we had a lot of trouble catching up to him,” said UV coach Tom Locke.

Each team struggled in the field combining for 11 total errors, and most of the errors were throwing, Locke said.

Brett Smith and Zach Montgomery had RBIs for UV, who play Walton on Monday.

“This was the best we’ve hit all season, and we also had a couple of nice sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks.

Avolio scattered five Sidney hits striking out 10 and walking one. UV was charged with 16 errors in its first two games, but played error-free softball last night. “We were just able to get outside and practice on a field,” said UV coach Eileen Lawyer. “Our first two games were our first times outside.”

Charlee Weidman and Hannah Benson scored insurance runs in the fourth coming home on well-placed sacrifice bunts by Lauren Peck and Brittany Fairchild. Weidman also had an RBI in the contest. “Maggie has pitched well all season, we’ve just been messy defensively until tonight,” Lawyer said.
