Greene 44, Unadilla Valley 31

NEW BERLIN – Greene used two big runs in the second and fourth quarters to establish command of its game with Unadilla Valley, and the Trojans advanced their winning streak to four games Tuesday.

Kaitlin Gorton hit four three-pointers in the game, and Rachel Turner scored nine points lifting the Trojans to 10 wins on the season. “We had a nice mixture of inside and outside scoring, and it was probably our best team effort of the season,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton.

Trailing UV 10-7 early in the second quarter, Gorton’s three-pointer tied the game to kickstart a 9-0 run that turned into a 14-2 salvo. Andrea Day, Emily Conroe, and Jessica Brooks contributed points, and Gorton finished the spurt the same way she started it – with a long three ball.

Unadilla Valley trimmed a 24-14 halftime deficit down to 30-27 late in the third quarter. Jordan Anderson had three baskets, and an Anderson feed to Lindsay Avolio for a layup with 1:02 left in the quarter made it a three-point game.

Day’s running left-handed basket in the painted area late in the third stemmed the host club’s momentum, and eight straight points to begin the fourth raised the advantage to 13 points.

“They changed some things up on us in the third quarter, and we wanted to attack the press, but we didn’t attack it smartly,” Gorton said. “But it seemed that whenever they had some momentum, we were able to get the big basket.”

Anderson and Amanda Off scored 10 points apiece for UV.

JOHNSON CITY – Despite having several players feeling under the weather, Norwich was able to pull away from Johnson City over the final three quarters to improve to 14-2 on the season.

Hannah Runyon and Molly DeMellier scored 13 points apiece to lead the NHS offense, and junior six-footer Hailey Dietrich produced her best all-around game of the season. Dietrich finished with seven points, 20 rebounds, and seven blocked shots. “Just like last year, Hailey has improved immensely as the year has gone on,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “She’s going to be a force next year.”

Sophie Stewart grabbed 12 boards and Runyon also snagged seven rebounds.

DeMellier, mired in a recent shooting slump, reached her season-high point total. “Molly made her first shot from the wing, after that, I knew she would be alright,” Bennett said.

G-MU 61, Laurens 28

COPES CORNERS – G-MU coach Jim Johnson could not have drawn up a better way to clinch his school’s first Tri-Valley League West title in five years.

With the Raiders’ seniors honored before their last regular season home game, everyone found the scoring column in a contest that turned into a blowout in the third quarter.

Tanya Barnes had 24 points for G-MU, 19 of those coming in the middle two quarters. “We had some early jitters, and that happens on senior night,” Johnson said. “We got things rolling, and they were rolling pretty good.”

All 10 players found the scoring column for G-MU. Brianne Lambert added 12 points in the victory. “The contributions came from the whole team tonight, and it was a fun way to clinch things,” Johnson said. “ Bri and Tanya have been on the varsity three and four years. They’ve seen the leaner days, so it was nice to have some success this year.”

G-MU will likely face Schenevus in the league championship game Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Oneonta State’s Fieldhouse.
