Heroin Dealer Sentenced To Four Years In Prison

NORWICH – A man pleaded guilty to trafficking heroin in the Norwich area Friday and accepted a plea arrangement that sentences him to four years in state prison.

Following months of investigation, the Norwich City Police and New York State Troopers arrested 40-year-old David A. Cahill on Sept. 30, 2009 on charges of trafficking heroin at his former residence at 4 Lee Ave.

Cahill pleaded guilty Friday to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a B class felony, and third-degree assault, and was sentenced to four years in prison and two years of post-release supervision.

Chenango County Court Judge W. Howard Sullivan also granted a furlough request by the defense to release Cahill from Feb. 7 to 14, so he may get his affairs in order.

Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride said Cahill would be drug tested upon his return Feb. 14 and faces up to nine years in prison if he tests positive for any illicit substances or if he violates any other terms of the seven-day release. Cahill told the court he needed to make long-term arrangements for his property and children before beginning his sentence.

Cahill pleaded guilty to two different crimes at the Friday plea.

He admitted he was selling heroin from his home and was responsible for starting a fight with another inmate at the jail, Dec. 31, 2009, while he awaited his day in court over the drug charges.

Cahill was arrested in a tactical police raid Sept. 30 after officers waited for his three children, ages 5, 7 and 9, to board the school bus.
