Blazing start keys Norwich win over Sabers

Girls’ Basketball

Norwich 51, Susquehanna Valley 34

NORWICH – Norwich came out like gangbusters in the opening quarter building an 18-5 lead, and it kept the double-digit margin the rest of the way to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Hannah Runyon had 14 points, 14 rebounds, and three assists for the Tornado, who led by 18 at halftime.

We came out just blazing,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “We were creating turnovers all over the place, and on offense, we had the best ball movement that I’ve seen in two years. (Susquehanna Valley) did a good job of fighting back in the third quarter, but we were able to settle down and play better defense in the fourth.”

The Sabers banked in two three-pointers in the third quarter and came as close as 13 points. “I think we were a little frustrated by what happened in the third quarter,” Bennett said.

Norwich substituted freely throughout the fourth quarter, and again built the lead back up to nearly 20 points. Hailey Dietrich added four steals and five rebounds for Norwich, who play Johnson City on Wednesday.

Norwich’s junior varsity team remained unbeaten improving to 5-0 with a 54-24 victory.

Walton overcame a scoreless first period in which it committed seven turnovers to hand Oxford its second loss of the season. “Both teams played with a lot of effort,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “We didn’t shoot the ball well. I hope we are able to overcome our offensive struggles.”

Haley Witchella scored 13 points for Oxford before fouling out with 3 1/2 minutes left in the game. Oxford fell behind by two, but had one more basket to knot the game up. That hoop, a Brooke Noble putback off an offensive rebound, tied the game at 24.

Chenango Valley 42, Greene 35

GREENE – Afton scored four points in the opening minute to take the lead. After that, the Greene defense limited the Crimson Knights to one field the rest of the first half in building a 29-9 advantage Friday night.

Rebecca Smith had her breakout game for the Trojans (2-2) scoring 13 points, pulling down 10 rebounds, and adding five steals. She and junior forward Jessica Brooks combined for 21 points on the inside, and the entire Greene roster found the scoring column.

“It was nice to see everyone find the scoring sheet,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “Everyone looked to shoot, and the ball movement was the best it has been all season.”

Saturday afternoon, Greene sophomore Caitlin Gorton’s three-pointer tied CV at 28-28 late in the third quarter, but the Warriors’ Maggie Bigart came right back with a three for her team to re-establish the advantage.

Greene was hurt by 20 percent shooting in the game (12-for-60), many of those attempts within a few feet of the basket. “We were short-handed and we played hard, we just missed to many inside opportunities that could have given us a chance to win,” coach Gorton said. “We played hard, played smart, and only had 11 turnovers, We just couldn’t get the easy shots to drop.”

Smith scored 10 points to lead Greene, and Caitline Gorton scored nine. The Trojans play at Walton Wednesday.
