S-E Gridders Win Fourth Straight Game

Sherburne-Earlville 30, Lafayette 6

MORRISVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville rushed for over 300 yards winning its fourth straight game, while also clinching the team’s first winning season since 2005. The Marauders have the opportunity to win six games for the first time since 1994 when it played in the Tri-Valley League.

“Securing the winning season was really important for the program, and the way we won... ,” said S-E head coach Mike Jasper. “The line was really physical. We took care of the gaps on blitzes, and the backs ran hard.”

Greg DuVall had his third straight 100-yard rushing game. He scored on a 64-yard TD run in the first quarter on S-E’s second play from scrimmage, and he added an eight-yard TD run in the second. Senior Will Slentz had two long TD runs – each over 60 yards – in the second quarter called back due to penalty. Still, despite having over 170 yards of runs wiped away because of ill-time penalties, the Marauders were able to persevere finishing with 353 yards rushing. “We seem to get penalties at the worst possible time, and that cost us against Westmoreland and Frankfort-Schuyler when the offense wasn’t there yet to allow us to bounce back,” Jasper said. “The team is playing with a lot of confidence, and when things go wrong now, we continue to play hard and keep fighting. They realize they can do a lot of good things, and they’re playing to win.”

Slentz secured S-E’s third TD with a three-yard run in the third, and Chris Santiago’s 29-yard TD upped the advantage to 30-0 after three periods.

“This team realizes they have something special this year, and we can achieve something that is a little better and above what we’ve had in the past,” Jasper said. “This coming week is important, and we want to finish strong.”

Bainbridge-Guilford 31, Unatego 15

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford clinched its fifth straight winning season as senior running back Dakota Vandermark ran for 181 yards and two scores, and sophomore quarterback Corbin Palmer, making his first start, had a TD run and a TD pass.

“We seem to be so close, we just couldn’t get over the hump,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly, who was happy with the winning season, but was looking back at the three losses by less than a touchdown. “We had to replace four of our five linemen, and it’s something special for Dakota to have the season that he’s had. And we’ve been able to put some points up.”

Exchange student Tim Hermann kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter for B-G to follow-up Vandermark’s 43-yard TD run. Palmer found the endzone on a two-yard keeper lifting the Bobcats to a 17-0 halftime lead.

Unatego kicked off to start the second half, but executed an onside kick to perfect. Still, B-G stopped Unatego on downs, and Palmer directed B-G on a short drive capped by a 21-yard TD pass to Aaron Coon.

Vandermark added a 47-yard TD run in the fourth, and with 1,278 yards rushing, is 54 shy of school record-holder John Stevens’ mark of 1,332.

The Bobcats (5-3) play at Greene Friday.

Sidney 48, Greene 0

SIDNEY – Sidney scored on its first possession of the game on the first of five TD passes by senior quarterback Dylan Umbra. Greene turned it over a total of four times as well as the Warriors were able to clinch a Class C playoff spot Friday.

“They executed their offense well, and their receivers made some great catches,” said Greene coach Tim Paske.

Josh Wilce had TD receptions of four and 37 yards in the first quarter, and added a one-yard TD run in the second. Andy Kozak also had two receiving TDs – both in the second quarter as the Warriors (7-1) built their lead to 40-0 at halftime.

Umbra finished 12-for-18 for 282 yards in the victory.

Kurt Shear rushed for 93 yards to lead Greene, and pass Corey Kilmer’s team record of 1,052 yards set in 1996. Shear has 1,132 yards with one game to play.
