Greene's Day has hat trick in shutout win

Field Hockey

Greene 5, Walton 0

GREENE – Andrea Day, who has served more as a playmaker the first four games, had her breakout game this season scoring three times for the Trojans in a shutout over Walton Tuesday.

Day had the final goal of a 3-0 first half, and tallied twice in the second half. “We played pretty well, but I thought Walton was good and their tackling was very skilled,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “They’re a young team that lost a lost of good seniors, and they’re reloading.”

Greene (5-0), who has blanked all five opponents, scored 2:50 into the game when Abbey Wentlent banged home a shot off a penalty corner pass from Brandee Schoonmaker. Schoonmaker upped the lead to two just five minutes later, this time Jahna Driscoll played the role of set-up person.

Unadilla Valley 1, Sidney 0

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley coach, Ryan Houck, said it was nice to see the good play by his team reflected on the scoreboard.

The Storm won for the first time this season scoring the game’s lone tally just 7:20 into the second half. Nate Mackey hit a long pass to Brett Smith, who reached the ball at the 18-yard box, and scored with a shot into the near post.

Kyle King, UV’s eighth-grade keeper, picked up the shutout win. King stopped a Hunter Sowersby breakaway in the first half, and added a diving save off a hard shot from the Warriors’ Tanner Genung.

“It was also nice to end this long stance of games,” Houck said. “We’ve played seven games in 12 days, and we finally get a little rest before our next game on Saturday at Afton.”

King and teammate Nick Meehan – who also had one goal – overlap on offense from the midfield, creating numerous opportunities for their team, Feltham said.

B-G is off until a Tuesday road date at Greene.
