Otselic Valley 2, DeRuyter 1

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley coach Kevin Springer asked the question: “When was the last time Otselic Valley’s girls’ soccer team started the season 1 and 0?”

The Vikings jumped out to a two-goal lead, and after DeRuyter picked up momentum with a late first-half goal, blanked the Rockets the rest of the way.

“DeRuyter is a really good team, and I think they’ll be one of the top teams in our league this year,” Springer said. “I don’t know. We were fired up and ready to play tonight.”

Springer also earned some bragging rights as his brother Tom coaches the Rockets. Tom has won every game against his brother since Kevin started coaching OV in 2007, a streak of eight or nine wins that just ended.

“I’ve never beaten him,” the OV coach said. “The girls were just ecstatic after the win, and so was I. In the back of my mind, I was hoping we could keep it close and make a game of it. As the game went on, I started to think that maybe we could hang on and get the win. I think the girls sensed it, and we really picked it up the last five or six minutes.”

OV drew a penalty kick after a foul in the box, and keeper Jessica Loomis was chosen by Springer to take the shot. She converted at 21:17, and just 10 minutes later, Nikki Olin took a through ball from Gabe Lyon to raise the Vikes’ first-half lead to a pair of goals.

“Last year, I think we had eight penalty kicks and only made one,” Springer said. “Jessica has been pretty consistent with them in practice, and she did a nice job tonight.”

OV is idle until a Thursday, Sept. 16 home game against Brookfield.

Lily Stalter had both goals for Franklin, the second coming on a crossing pass from Jordan Beers. “It was an outside pass to the middle, and my stopper was caught on her heels,” said G-MU coach Kristen Bradbury. “The pass was there, (Stalter) brought it in, and scored.”

G-MU took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Miranda Hill chipped in a shot over the goalie’s head. The Raiders finished with a 23-17 edge in shots on goals. “Regardless of the outcome, I was more pleased with this game than the one against Worcester,” Bradbury said. “We played well, kept the ball down, communicated well, and we had a lot of shots.”

G-MU plays Friday and Saturday at the Unadilla Valley Tournament.

Susquehanna Valley 4, Norwich 0

NORWICH – Susquehanna Valley pulled away with three goals in the second half – two from Rebecca Drake – to defeat the Purple Tornado on Tuesday.

The lone goal of the first half came from the Sabers’ Mary Rood, who headed in a cornerkick.

“We lost to them 8-0 last year, and we cut that in half,” said Norwich coach Diane Fiorina. “The next time, we’ll cut it in half again and add some goals of our own.”

Fiorina lauded the play of defensive fullback Taylor Hagenbuch, who provided defensive support for Norwich’s sweeper and stopper.

Norwich plays at Johnson City Thursday.

Greene 5, Deposit 0

DEPOSIT – As a freshman on Greene’s state championship game, about the only time Jahna Driscoll found herself on the offensive end was when her team had a penalty corner.

With the graduation of many top scorers off that title team, Driscoll was moved to the forward line Tuesday night, and she responded with a career-best four goals.

“Her first two shots were push shots, not lightning bolts, but they served their purpose,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “She’s a smart player and she has that knack for getting the ball in the goal.”

Greene led by two goals at halftime and its defense did not allow a Deposit shot or penalty corner. Emily Gascon came off the bench to score the Trojans’ other goal.
