Oneonta Track Teams Down Norwich

By: Patrick Newell

ONEONTA – Norwich’s advantage in the field events was not enough to overcome the Yellowjackets’ dominance on the track as host Oneonta beat the Tornado boys, 84-67.

Norwich trailed by nearly 40 points on the track fueled by Oneonta’s top-three sweeps in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. “Those two events gave them 18 points, the rest of the meet we’re even with them if not ahead,” said Norwich coach Paul Sims.

Norwich’s 1,600-meter relay team of Kyle Acenowr, Nate Ashton, Cameron Turner, and Matt Murray turned in a season-best winning time of 3:41.9, and Sims says this group could approach the school record by year-end.

For the girls, Sarah Bonnell won four total events – one on a relay – and Cleo Daoud had two individual first-place finishes in an 85-55 loss to the ‘Jackets. Again, the individual distance races were Norwich’s downfall as Oneonta claimed the top three spots in each event to widen the bulge.

Also grabbing wins for the Tornado girls were Katie Benenati (100-meter hurdles), Shannon Curley (discus), and Elisha Eddy (shot put).

Norwich hosts Seton Catholic Central on Thursday.

Brookfield 15, Otselic Valley 6

BROOKFIELD – Brookfield scored seven runs in the third inning to grab the lead, and kept OV from winning its first game of the season on Tuesday.

Corey Cowen homered for Brookfield, while also pitching the last four-plus innings to earn the victory.

Karl Graham was 3-for-3 on the OV side, Chase Marston hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and Adam Monroe added a solo round-tripper in the defeat. “The pitching was strong for Brookfield most of the game,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We played better and we’re showing improvement.”

Cooperstown 6, S-E 0

COOPERSTOWN – Cooperstown had its way on the basepaths, and capitalized on five S-E errors in a shutout win over the Marauders (0-2) Tuesday at Doubleday Field.

“The biggest thing is that we struck out 12 times,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks, whose club held a 7-6 edge in hits. “We weren’t making the right adjustments at the plate. We had a couple of critical baserunning errors, and their eight stolen bases hurt.”

Craig Broaderson had two hits and two RBI for Cooperstown, and Jim Donnolly added a 2-for-3 day. The Redskins were also 8-for-8 on the aforementioned stolen base attempts.

Cory Musician had two hits for S-E, who face Mount Markham on Thursday.

BAINBRIDGE – Sidney scored seven unearned runs in the sixth inning with two outs and no runners on base to pull away from B-G on Tuesday.

After B-G recorded the first two outs of the inning, an error initiated the Warriors’ uprising. Dylan Umbra led Sidney with three hits and two RBI.

Travis Colburn reached base safely three times in four at-bats for B-G with a hit and two walks. Paul Parsons added a solo homer in the first inning.
