Chenango Forks 12, Norwich 4

NORWICH – Chenango Forks got off the bus ready to hit Norwich pitching on Monday. The Blue Devils scored all 12 of their runs in the opening four innings to claim a STAC victory over the Tornado batsmen.

“They’re a very good hitting club, and I was very impressed with their patience at the plate,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “They were hitting ‘their’ pitches, and we struggled against Dybas (Tom).”

While his offense was churning, Dybas logged five innings for the win. He struck out six and allowed just two Norwich hits.

Oxford 7, Hancock 3

OXFORD – Coming off some lopsided losses late last week, Oxford shored up its defense and pitching, and won for the first time this season on Monday night.

After Hancock scored two runs in the first, Oxford answered with two of its own. Hancock again put a run on the board in the second before the Blackhawks tied and took the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame.

“Answering their two runs in the first was key for us from a momentum standpoint,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Taking the lead was huge. After last week, just being in a ballgame and feeling like we could win was important.”

Ryan Moore scored Kyle Ferrington with a sacrifice fly in the first, and Derrick Head’s RBI single tied the game. In the second, Chris Covey and Ferrington had back-to-back RBI groundouts giving Oxford the lead.

Ferrington struck out five and walked three for a complete-game win, and the Blackhawks took advantage of three Hancock errors in the fifth to pad the advantage with three more runs.

DeRuyter 6, Otselic Valley 4

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley, leading most of the way, gave up three runs in the sixth inning to DeRuyter, who prevailed over the winless Vikings Monday.

Brett Vosberg had a double for the Rockets in the victory, who trailed 4-1 after three innings.

“It was a game that could have gone either way, we just made some misplays at significant times that led to their runs,” said OV coach Dave Loomis.

OV plays at Brookfield today.

G-MU 18, Schenevus 3

COPES CORNERS – Jim Johnson’s pregame worries were all for naught.

The longtime G-MU skipper, whose club put up just two runs in each of its first two games, mashed Schenevus pitching for 10 runs in the opening inning en route to a blowout victory Monday.

“I was concerned about these guys because they had beaten South Kortright handily,” Johnson said. “They have a group of players that were good in soccer and good in basketball, and we thought they would be really good in baseball. We were a little worried, but we got our bats rolling early, and hit the ball hard all night.”

Alex Schmidt had the biggest day of many big days in the G-MU lineup. Schmidt pitched four innings for the win, and supported his effort with a 4-for-5 day at the plate and five RBI. Andrew Delmar went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI, and DeMario Reed along with Brenda Zucchi also had 3-for-5 days.

G-MU plays a makeup game at Morris today.
