Norwich 44, Greene 38
GREENE – Norwich climbed back to the .500 mark sealing Tuesday’s non-league win over Greene by hitting 5-of-6 free throws in the game’s waning moments.
Tornado junior Molly DeMellier scored a career-high 21 points, and was 4-for-4 from the foul line in the last quarter. Bryn Loomis added the other free throw for Norwich (8-8) finishing with nine points.
“We talked before the game about DeMellier being their outside threat, and not leaving her on defense,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We left her a few times, and she killed us.”
The Trojans’ Andrea Day was DeMellier’s equal at the other end of the floor, and she also finished with a career-high 21 points. Liz Wentlent chipped in with 13 for the Trojans. Gorton was thankful for the opportunity to play a larger school as his team prepares for the postseason.
“Norwich is a good team, and we knew they would be,” the Greene coach said. “That’s why we wanted to play them. This will help us get ready for sectionals. When we fell behind in this game, we battled back and were able to cut their lead down to two points in the fourth quarter.”
Greene hosts Delhi on Friday.

Sherburne-Earlville 35, Canastota 28
CANASTOTA – Sherburne-Earlville produced a team-record for wins in a season the last two years, but didn’t achieve what it accomplished Tuesday night.
The Marauders captured their first Center State Conference division title beating second-place Canastota on the road.
“We’ve been so close the last two years, I was so proud of the girls to finally do it,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan.
In a game where points came at a premium, S-E senior Kristi Vibbard supplied quick and prolific offense early in the fourth quarter to push her club in front for good. Vibbard had eight straight points for the Marauders (15-3) hitting two three-pointers, then converting a steal into a layup. Vibbard finished with 15 points to lead her team in scoring, and Bridget Irwin tacked on 10.
Defensively, S-E held Canastota’s top scorers – Alicia Hibbard and Shea Foster – to 17 combined points. In the first meeting this season, Hibbard and Foster racked up 30 total points. “Defensively, we wanted to contain Hibbard and Foster, and Bridget, Kate (Adams), and Liz (Farrow) did a good job on them,” Mulligan said.
S-E is idle until the start of the Section III, Class C playoffs.
