OTEGO – Greene wrapped up its third straight Midstate Athletic Conference division title Tuesday, and will play Harpursville or Oxford for the league championship later this month.

A 17-5 start in the first quarter set the tone for Greene, who clamped down defensively for most of the game against the Spartans.

“We had a fantastic first quarter,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We moved the ball well and hit our shots.”

Greene was 8-for-12 from the field in the opening quarter with five different players scoring. Liz Wentlent and Andrea Day were the lone players to have two buckets in the first quarter in a display of offensive balance.

Wentlent finished with 19 points to lead the Trojans (12-3), who have won seven straight games and nine of 10 contests. “Winning a division title is a team goal and a real thrill for us,” Gorton said. “We had a tough start in December, but we’ve really started to jell and pick each other up. Our defense has been the key.”

COPES CORNERS – Sam Meyerhoff scored all 27 of her points in the second half as Charlotte Valley beat the Raiders in a non-league game.

Meyerhoff hit one three-pointer, but did most of her scoring on the inside netting 14 in the third quarter and 13 of her team’s 17 in the last quarter. Meyeroff outgunned G-MU’s top scorer, Tanya Barnes, who was not far behind bucketing 22 points.

“It was fun to watch two relentless players,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Meyerhoff is on the inside, and Tanya is just all over. Their play is infectious for their teammates.”

G-MU plays Franklin on Friday.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley dropped its second overtime contest to a club with a winning record in the last three weeks as the Warriors’ Dani Gravel scored seven points in the second overtime period.

Gravel hit an early three ball in the second OT, and then made 4-of-6 from the foul line in an 11-4 stanza.

S-E 54, Waterville 49

SHERBURNE – An underclassmen carried the S-E offense early, and it was a senior playing perhaps his final game on the Marauders’ home floor who supplied the key points to secure Tuesday’s victory.

Down 10-2 at the start, junior Cameron Yerton came off the bench to hit three three-pointers bringing the Marauders back within two points at halftime

Still trailing 49-46 with 3:15 to play in regulation, S-E’s defense held Waterville scoreless the rest of the way, and senior scoring leader Sean Boise had his team’s final six points. Boise hit a foul line jumper to move his club in front, 50-49. Boise scored in transition after a defensive stop, and then capped his 17-point night with two free throws.
