Sherburne-Earlville 63, Mt. Markham 58

WEST WINFIELD – Sherburne-Earlville defeated Center State Conference Division II leader Mt. Markham on Friday, and moved to within one game of the Mustangs in the standings.

In a game of runs, the Marauders (5-3, 8-7) had the last one, a 6-0 salvo to break away from a 55-54 game. Cameron Yerton hit a three-pointer, and Sean Boise converted essential free throws to close out the win.

Early in the game, S-E finished the first quarter on a 12-1 salvo, and built its lead to 30-14 with three minutes left in the first half. Mt. Markham bundled together an 18-2 rush to knot the game by halftime. “I felt we showed a lot of character, especially on the road, to bounce back and play a good second half,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley regrouped in the second half, and erased Cincinnatus’ seven-point halftime lead to win for the 11th time this season.

Dusty Davis came alive with a career-high night. Davis, who was averaging under 10 points a game coming into the contest, was mired in a recent scoring slump averaging just 5.5 points over the last four games. The junior forward broke through in a big way netting 34 points.

“Thirty-four points is a big night for anybody,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “(Davis) had been struggling to find his range, but he was able to take the ball inside, and did a nice job for us.”

Ethan Rounds added his second straight double-double finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds. “Cincinnatus came to play tonight, and they gave us more than we could handle in the first half,” Loomis said. “We made a little adjustment at halftime, and tightened up defensively.”

Morris 29, G-MU 12

MORRIS – G-MU was held to its all-time low point total in converting just five field goals against Morris’ tough man-to-man defense.

For their part, the Raiders gave up just 69 points in two games against the Tri-Valley League front-runner. “They have the best size in the league and they’re athletic,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman of the Mustangs. “When you hold an undefeated team to that many points, wow, you think you would have a good chance of winning. We weren’t even close in either game.”

Westport 62, B-G 49

WESTPORT – B-G coach Ben Nelson brought his team to one of his former stomping grounds, and Nelson’s Bobcats came up short Saturday against the state-ranked Eagles of Section VII.

Westport busted out to a 22-4 lead at the outset, and led 35-15 at the break behind 16 points from Nate Gay. Bo McKinley scored 16 in the second half to help his team maintain its lead. Over the final two quarters, B-G (5-7) held a 34-27 advantage.

“Their two good players (Gay and McKinley) killed us, although the bus ride (four hours) wasn’t too good either,” Nelson said, who worked at Camp Dudley in Westport for several years, and was an assistant girls varsity basketball coach for Westport as well. “We knew how we wanted to defend McKinley and Gay, we just didn’t do a very good job of stopping them.”

McKinley finished with 28 points and Gay 24.

Justin Pepper had 15 points to lead B-G, who play Delhi tonight.
