OXFORD – This Saturday, at 7:30 p.m, 6 On The Square (6OTS) welcomes three local stars for the annual 6OTS Local Talent Night! On stage will be Tim Sheehan, Emilee Smith, and LJ Gates for a musical evening that will entertain you with folk, rock, jazz and more; a meld of American styles. You may be familiar with one or all three of these fine musicians as they’ve all performed acoustically at 6 On The Square’s Open Mic Night!
“Local Doofus with Guitar,” is a comical self-description by Tim Sheehan, but he’s anything but. Tim has been at almost every Open Mic, and at each performance, his “6 On The Square Theme Song” has been requested. With lyrics such as,“Drove around in the cool night air, Till I saw a sign that said 6 On The Square….” he’s been amusing and charming audiences ever since he started there. Tim will be performing his original, as well as cover tunes.
Oxford native Lyndon Gates, singer-songwriter, is not new to the music business, but lately great things have been happening. Gates has thirty years of experience in the business. He formed the group LJ Gates, managed by his wife Julie, and writes his own original compositions. Lyrics for his bluesy-rock songs are sometimes based on politics and sometimes by the people in his life. His writing has led to his first solo project; a CD simply titled “LJ Gates.” This past summer at 6OTS, LJ had a CD release party. More great news, Gates’ song, Workin’ Slobs, has been nominated as “Song of the Year” by the Catskill Community Radio.
Teen Emilee Jay Smith ( “EmJay”) from Smyrna has wowed audiences with her deep, sultry alto voice and piano accompaniment; many feel is beyond her young (15) years. She has been playing piano for four years, though it was only a year ago that she decided to write and perform her own music. EmJay has since performed many Open Mic’s like 6OTS’ as well as Hamilton’s Skyway Fest, The Utica Boilermaker, the Utica Music and Arts Fest, and she was the opening act for rock legend Blue Oyster Cult at Fireworks Over Utica.
