Norwich 65, Windsor 54

NORWICH – Norwich played perhaps its best half of the season, and weathered Windsor’s comeback effort to post its second straight win on Friday night.

Norwich (5-4) allowed just one field goal in the first period, while Bryn Loomis scored eight points as Norwich led 15-3 at the start. The lead grew to as many as 23 points in the second quarter behind back-to-back three balls from Hannah Runyon and Molly DeMellier. “We did a good job of being patient and taking what the defense was giving us,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett said of his club’s quick beginning.

Windsor used a full-court press throughout the second half, and were as close as 54-47 with two minutes left. Runyon was 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to finish with 23 points, and Loomis was 7-for-8 from the foul line in the last eight minutes winding up with a career-high 19 points.

Windsor’s Amy Goetz had 15 points in the last three minutes of game – 12 on four straight three-pointers – to keep her team in the hunt. “We played smart and played hard on defense,” Bennett said, adding that his team did a good job making free throws late in the game.

Oxford 43, Bainbridge-Guilford 24

OXFORD – Oxford’s dominant defense held Bainbridge-Guilford in check for four quarters, and the Blackhawks improved to 5-0 in MAC division play Saturday afternoon.

In spite of leading scorer Haley Witchella sitting most of the first half with foul trouble, Oxford was able to expand a 12-9 first-quarter lead to 20-13 at the half.

Julie Heggie had a steal and a layup late in the second quarter, and Alyshia Crawford’s driving basket made it 20-9. B-G didn’t score its first points of the second quarter until the final 1:16. “We were able to extend our lead with Haley out of the game, and that says a lot about the rest of our players,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “We had good ball pressure, and our defensive rotations were solid. To hold a team like B-G to 24 points is impressive.”

Witchella had seven points in the fourth quarter as Oxford pulled away. She finished with 13 points and seven boards. Crawford added five assists, three blocked shots, and four rebounds.

CHERRY VALLEY – Cherry Valley-Springfield took advantage of 10 G-MU turnovers in the second quarter, and created the bulk of the winning margin of victory in that stanza.

Morgan VanAlstine had 11 of her game-high 20 points in a 16-5 second quarter that gave the host team a 22-12 halftime advantage.

“When we had a chance to set ourselves, our halfcourt defense was superb,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Because of the turnovers in that quarter, they were able to get some easy baskets.”

Down by 15 in the fourth quarter, the Raiders closed to within 33-27 at one point. CV-S’s Nadine Guersey stopped the rally in its tracks hitting back-to-back baskets, and all six of her points in the last quarter.
