OXFORD – Oxford won the showdown of unbeaten division leaders creating a wide bulge in the second quarter after B-G’s starting forward Ryan Porter went down with an injury.

“After Porter was hurt, that made a bit of a difference,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “We switched defenses and applied more pressure to their guards. We were able to convert some easy baskets off turnovers and got things going.”

Cory Seiler racked up 19 points to lead the Blackhawks (5-0, 7-5), who are on track for another appearance in the MAC championship game.

Steve Patten and Justin Pepper scored 12 points apiece for B-G (4-1, 4-6).

During Saturday’s games, Oxford raised over $1,500 for its Third Annual Coaches versus Cancer fundraiser. Proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society, Davis said.

Norwich 82, Windsor 37

WINDSOR – Norwich coach Mark Abbott was glad his team was at peak offensive efficiency in the first quarter; however, he had little good to say about his club’s opening-stanza defense.

“We played absolutely no defense in the first quarter,” Abbott said. “We were fortunate our shots were falling, otherwise we would have been looking at a deficit.”

Norwich went 9-for-12 from the field in the first quarter – 5-of-6 from behind the three-point arc – and Casey Edwards made all three of his trifecta attempts as Norwich led 26-19.

Windsor made better than 50 percent of its shots in the second quarter, but went 1-for-12 in the second quarter against a more inspired NHS defensive unit. Norwich extended its lead to 43-22 after two periods, then had its best offensive quarter of the season putting 31 on the board in the third.

Richie Bonney scored 14 of his season-high 24 in the stanza, Derek Hughes had eight assists in that quarter alone, and finished with 18 assists in just three quarters, one assist below the team record. Bonney added 17 rebounds, Edwards bucketed a career-high 15 points, and Josh Borfitz added 14 points. Norwich’s defensive performance included 20 team steals, six from Hughes, who did not score a point, but surely proved his value in every other way.

During the second half with Abbott subbing his entire lineup, Norwich’s Jacob Kelly hit a three-pointer to finish off a rare team accomplishment. “Every player on our roster now has a three-pointer. That’s just mind boggling,” Abbott said. “Our kids definitely aren’t shy about shooting three-pointers, and we encourage that aggressive mentality. We’re also making (three-pointers) at a pretty good pace.”

Cherry Valley-Springfield 41 G-MU 40

COPES CORNERS – G-MU’s last-second shot for the win from just inside halfcourt was off the mark, and Cherry Valley-Springfield was able to hang on Friday night.

Alex Schmidt’s put-back basket for the Raiders closed the gap to 41-40. G-MU gathered a rebound after a CV-S missed free throw, but turned the ball over on the ensuing possession.

CV-S again missed the front end of a free throw situation setting up G-MU’s last-ditch shot attempt. “The kids are coming around and playing more competitively,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. Hartman said that the Patriots had just one league loss entering the contest. “We knew we would be challenged, and my kids were disappointed with the loss. There was an awful lot of positives to look at. We looked like a team, and we played a fine game.”

Jon Scofield had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots for G-MU. Andrew Delmar scored 10 points, and Schmidt had nine points to go with seven boards.
