Maine-Endwell 73, Norwich 57
NORWICH – Norwich was unable to keep pace with defending Class A sectional champion Maine-Endwell, although it did hang tough with the Spartans for much of the contest on Friday.
Behind a pair of three-pointers from senior Tatyana Ithier, Norwich was as close as five points in the last stanza. The Spartans’ Kristen Chelak had two critical put-back baskets to right the M-E ship, and the Spartans made 8-of-11 free throws in the last quarter to widen the final margin.
“It seemed like every time we got something going in the fourth quarter, they had an answer,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “They shot the ball extremely well, and when they missed, Chelak and (Carrie) Bushnell worked hard on the boards. I was very impressed with the way Chelak played in the fourth quarter.”
An 8-0 run midway through the first quarter erased Norwich’s early lead, and gave M-E a 17-12 advantage.
Megan Touhey had 14 points in the first half, and finished with 17 to lead the Spartans. Chelak added 15.
Hannah Runyon scored 17 for Norwich, and Ithier followed closely with a career-high 16 points. “Maine-Endwell was able to take advantage of some situations when we were out of position on defense,” Bennett said. “I couldn’t be prouder of our team. We may lose some games, but we’ll never be outworked.”
Norwich’s away game with Owego on Friday was postponed to a later date in January.

Sidney 39, Oxford 29
OXFORD – Sidney’s Dani Gravel hit back-to-back three balls at the end of the third and early in the fourth to stake her club to an eight-point lead.
Gravel’s first three gave her club a 27-22 lead at the end of the third quarter, and the second three ball provided what proved the winning points.
Oxford shot just 29 percent from the field in failing to reach 30 points for the first time this season. “Other than the second quarter, they outplayed us in just about every area,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “They played tough, physical defense, and I didn’t do a good job putting our girls in a good position to win.”
Haley Witchella led Oxford with 12 points.

Harpursville 57, Greene 55
HARPURSVILLE – Harpursville hit five free throws in the final quarter to hold off Greene’s furious rally in Tuesday’s matchup.
The Trojans whittled a 12-point last-quarter deficit down to two points behind 10 points from Liz Wentlent and six from Erin Smith.
Harpursville jumped out to a big lead at the outset as junior Hannah Kimmel scored 19 points in the opening quarter on her way to a 29-point night.
The Trojans were down 13 at the first turn and cut the deficit back to two points. Abby Klutts and Erin Dietzman keyed a 10-0 Hornets run to end the first half.
“We didn’t rebound as well in this game as we have been, and we gave up too many second-chance opportunities in the second and third quarters,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton.
Smith finished with a career-high 23 points to lead the Trojans, and Wentlent added 17 points.
