GREENE – A quick five-point spurt by the host Trojans allowed them to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by the Bobcats, and cinch up an opening-game win on Wednesday.

The Bobcats trimmed an eight-point Greene lead to three scoring the first five points of the final stanza. Brian Day canned a three ball with 3:30 left in the game – Greene’s first points of the quarter – to double the lead. Alex Driscoll stole the ensuing inbounds pass, and Brendan Kinne hit a driving layup racheting the Greene comfort zone back to eight points.

“B-G is a well-coached team and plays good defense,” said Greene coach Jeff Paske. “We were able to create some turnovers, and made some key plays when we needed to.”

Kinne had 12 points to lead the Trojans, and forward Mark McDermott added 11.

Steve Patten paced the Bobcats scoring 13 points.

Greene hosts Harpursville Friday at 8:45 p.m. in the first round of its tip-off tournament.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley made a defensive adjustment in the third quarter, and was able to create some separation between it and visiting Deposit Wednesday.

The Storm used a zone press and backed into a zone defense to slow down Deposit’s offense and generate turnovers. “We were able to get some steals, and Thomas Wallace had some easy baskets,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “We also did a much better job shutting down their penetration, and we rebounded better.”

Wallace had 10 of his 19 in the third quarter. Freshman Justin Hofer led the Storm with 23 points to go with six rebounds, three steals, and three blocked shots. Hofer scored eight in the final period to stem Deposit’s rally attempt.

UV plays Unatego Friday at the S-E tournament.
