First Annual Nancy Bromley/Nancy Barrows Tournament
GREENE – Greene beat two defending Section IV field hockey champions, and did so in lopsided fashion this past weekend.
The Trojans, also defending sectional titlists, blew out Maine-Endwell, 6-0 in the semifinals, then rolled to a 5-1 rout of Marathon in Saturday’s fina of the First Annual Nancy Bromley/Nancy Barrows Tournament.
It was just Marathon’s second defeat this season, and for Maine-Endwell, two of its three losses have come to the Trojans this season.
“These next few games, we thought we would find out what we were made of,” said Greene’s victorious coach, Sue Carlin. “Position for position, we’re just so strong this year.”
Marathon grabbed the lead less than five minutes into the game. Alexis Root scored at 25:46, and that tally was the first time the Trojans have trailed all season. Erin Smith scored on a penalty stroke 10 minutes later, and Emily Conroe had the go-ahead goal before halftime. Jahna Driscoll added two goals in the second half, and Chrissy Conroe finished with one goal and two assists. “After we fell behind, that was the most intense 10 minutes,” Carlin said in describing her team’s response to the deficit. “They were on a mission to score the tying goal.”
Greene scored four goals in the opening half against the Spartans, and save for the early moments of the second half, were not threatened on Friday. “Maine-Endwell usually comes out and plays a strong second half, and we wanted to be ready,” Carlin said. “Sure enough, they did come out strong. All of a sudden we snapped out of it, and scored two more goals.”
Smith had a hat trick for the Trojans to lead the offense, and Andrea Day finished with one goal and two assists.
Greene outshot its two outstanding opponents by a combined 30 to 10. Anna Crumb, Christine Conroe, Emily Conroe, Smith, and Driscoll were all named to the all-tournament team.

MADISON – Matt Zebert scored on a direct kick in overtime to give Madison a victory over the Vikings Friday.
OV received goals from Mike Larkin and D.J. Worden, and led 1-0 at halftime. “It was back and forth, like most of the games we’ve played this year,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We had a lot of opportunities to score, and played well enough to come out on top. We just didn’t finish.”
