GREENE – On homecoming weekend, Greene virtually spurned the passing game, and racked up a season-best 422 rushing yards to stay on course for a Class C playoff spot.

Three Greene backs rushed for over 100 yards, the first time that has occurred in one game under head coach Tim Paske, and the total rushing yards is the largest in the Greene mentor’s seven-year tenure.

After a Sidney turnover in the opening moments of the game, Scott Gorton connected with younger brother Kyle Gorton on a 20-yard scoring toss. That would be the lone completion for the Trojans, who came in averaging over 150 yards of passing offense per game.

Sidney, instead, received a steady dose of Trojans running backs Tyler Beckwith, Dan Jenks, and Nick Wilcox.

Jenks had scoring runs of 36 and two yards in the first half to give Greene a 20-8 halftime lead.

Wilcox added third-quarter TD runs of 27 and three yards in the second half, while Beckwith scored on a one-yard run, and Kurt Shear capped the scoring with a two-yard dandy.

Wilcox rushed for 121 yards on just six carries. Jenks had 110 on 12 totes, and Beckwith 104 yards. For the game, Greene averaged nearly 10 yards per carry.

Sidney’s Dylan Umbra had 64 yards rushing and 51 passing to pace his club.

Greene (5-1) plays at Chenango Forks (6-0) on Saturday.

Bainbridge-Guilford 28, Seton Catholic Central 19

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford won its fifth straight game, and is one division win away from clinching a second straight Class D playoff berth.

Down by a score early in the game, B-G utilized its power running game to regroup and take the lead.

“They kind of threw us off a little bit at the start,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “We prepared for their power and stacked ‘I formation,” and they came out in the spread and started throwing. We were able to adjust and limit their catches after that.”

On B-G’s second possession Daren Terpstra closed the score to 7-6 on a one-yard TD run. Billy Holden, who moved to fullback full-time – from offensive lineman – in the second half after a Terpstra injury, gave B-G the lead for good with another one-yard plunge.

Jesse Wood, who was coming off back-to-back 200-yard rushing games for Seton, hit paydirt on a nine-yard run as the Bobcats’ lead closed to 14-13.

Senior B-G quarterback, Justin Pepper, helped his team regain command with a 15-yard TD run and an 11-yard TD pass to Ryan Porter upped the lead to 15 points.

“Seton was bigger and more physical than we thought they would be, but I though our offensive line did a great job creating holes,” Mattingly said. “Their defense was intent on stopping our inside traps. Pepper did an excellent job running bootlegs, and that opened things up.”

B-G ran for 286 yards with Terpstra finishing with 89, Holden 73, and Pepper 71 yards.
