Greene 1, Maine-Endwell 0

GREENE – In a matchup of returning Section IV champions, Greene remained unbeaten on the season edging Maine-Endwell.

Erin Smith scored for the Trojans (5-0) with 3:28 left in the first half. She took a pass on a penalty corner from Jahna Driscoll, pulled the ball left to avoid an M-E defender, and blasted a hard shot that nicked off a Spartans defender into the goal.

“I thought we played very well under pressure today,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “They gave us a good test, and we weathered the storm. Our defense came up big when we needed it.”

Kyle Ferrington made a run with the ball up the right side, and after moving toward the middle, was tripped in the box to set up the winning goal.

Unatego held nearly a 2-to-1 advantage in shots on goal, and had Oxford on its heels early after creating a two-goal bulge. “They were a lot better than the last time we saw them,” said Oxford coach Matt Dorman of Unatego.

Taylor Bates scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to give Oxford the lead. Bates added a second-half goal to complete his four-tally day. “It was great to see the guys step up, and I was kind of wondering when we would do it,” Dorman said. “Coming back from two goals is not impossible, but it wasn’t a great feeling to give up the first goal just five minutes into the game.”
