Oxford makes it back-to-back wins in victory over UV

Oxford 4, Unadilla Valley 1

OXFORD – Oxford made it back-to-back wins on Wednesday afternoon topping Unadilla Valley in Midstate Athletic Conference play.

Kyle Ferrington scored the first of his two goals 10 minutes into the game, and Taylor Bates made it 2-0 at halftime.

Oxford finished with 26 shots on goal, and dominated most of the play. “We’re putting up a decent number of goals, but it’s taking a lot of shots to do it,” said Oxford coach Matt Dorman. “I was impressed with the way we moved the ball. We were hitting open spaces and making good runs.”

Justin Schray had a goal and an assist for Oxford, who built a 4-0 lead before the Storm’s Dan Keefe connected on a direct kick to break up the shutout.

Oxford plays at Delhi Friday.

Otselic Valley 4, Brookfield 3 (OT)

BROOKFIELD – Otselic Valley traded leads with Brookfield before prevailing in overtime Wednesday.

Brent Rasmussen tallied 7:28 into the first overtime period getting a pass from D.J. Worden. “This was one of the best games we’ve had in a while,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “It was a great game, and both teams deserve a lot of credit.”

The Vikings (2-0) trailed 1-0 at halftime, but picked up back-to-back goals from Nate Stark and Brad Moyer to take the lead. Dusty Davis had OV’s third goal, one that gave his team a 3-2 lead.

The Vikings play at Cincinnatus Friday.

BINGHAMTON – Seton Catholic Central surged in the final five minutes of the first half scoring two goals to raise its lead over the Tornado to three goals at halftime.

“We played pretty well up until the last five minutes of the half,” said Norwich coach John McCumiskey. “It was fairly even early in the second half until we made some glaring errors.”

Norwich was as close as 4-2 in the second half after David Layman’s tally and Ryan Tomanocy’s successful penalty kick.

Norwich plays at Sus Valley Friday.

LAURENS – Phoenix Howard capitalized on G-MU’s inability to clear the ball out of its defensive zone, and scored in the first half for the Leopards Wednesday.

“I was hopeful coming out of the Oxford Tournament (that we were improving), but we haven’t played well this week,” said G-MU coach Mark Luettger.

Field Hockey

S-E 0, Ilion 0 (OT)

ILION – Sherburne-Earlville and Ilion narrowly escaped prime scoring attempts by the opposition, and the two clubs settled for a tie on Wednesday.

It was the third game in as many days for the Marauders, whose best chance to score came in the extra period. S-E had a breakaway attempt, but the shot went wide of the goal.

Ilion nearly cashed in at the end of regulation, its best scoring opportunity, said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “Our defense scrambled, and we were able to get the ball out of the penalty circle,” Cooman said.
