Nate Sloan’s two-run homer in the fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie. G-MU tacked on four more in the fifth highlighted by Andrew Delmar’s two-run single to score Cody Hall and Tyler Wildfeir. “We’ve avenged two of our three losses, and we hope to get a chance to avenge the third (against Afton), or at least have a chance to play for a championship,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “We’re playing in June, and that’s what we were hoping for.”

Hall and Wildfeir hit back-to-back doubles in the opening inning, and Delmar followed with an RBI single putting the Raiders in front early

Hall had three hits in the game, and pitched a complete-game victory. Wildfeir added two hits, and Delmar drove in four runs.

The Raiders (18-3), winners of 10 straight games, play at top-seeded South Kortright on Tuesday. G-MU has beaten the Rams the last two meetings in previous seasons. “They won a sectional soccer title and a state title in basketball this year, so we know they have some good kids over there,” Johnson said. “It should be a good one.”

Afton 11, Deposit 4

AFTON – Afton (16-5) capitalized on a Deposit fielding mishap in the opening inning, and played with the lead the rest of the way to advance to the Section IV, Class D semifinals Tuesday at Jefferson.

Jacob Arnold hit a two-out pop-up to the infield with a pair of Afton runners aboard. The ball fell without a Deposit player touching the ball to score the tying and go-ahead runs in the opening inning. Two batters later Mike Muller connected on a two-run double upping the lead to 4-1.

“We went from scoring no runs to four runs in a heartbeat,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp. “From there, we hit the ball hard.”

Adam Rupakus went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, and Victor Coronado had two hits and single ribbie.

Casey Mohrein went the distance for the victory striking out nine, and the Crimson Knights did not commit an error. “Defensively we’re at 100 percent, and our bats have really come around,” Rapp said.

Maine-Endwell 4, Norwich 2

ENDWELL – Norwich (7-10) gave defending Class A state champion Maine-Endwell all it could handle Saturday before succumbing in the Section IV playoffs.

Ryan Jones’ two-run single in the bottom of the third gave the Spartans a 4-0 lead, and those two insurance runs were the final margin of victory.

Norwich cut the M-E lead in half in the top of the fourth. Mike Moon hit an RBI single to score Christian Hotaling, and Moon came in on a passed ball. Moon finished 2-for-3, and Josh Borfitz had two doubles for the Tornado.

Norwich pitcher Timmy Clark was the hard-luck loser. He allowed just four hits to the Spartans, the number one seed in the section. “It was a close game with good pitching on both teams’ part,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “We gave them a run for their money, unfortunately we came up on the short end.”

Oxford 7, Groton 2

GROTON – Coming in as the underdog, Oxford played from the front at the outset, and knocked off higher-seeded Groton on the road Friday afternoon.

Julie Heggie went 4-for-4 with two RBI, and Marlena Frank’s RBI triple in the seventh had the Blackhawks (7-11) firmly in control.

“We’ve been more consistent and we have been more positive,” said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “We were aggressive on the bases and made them make mistakes.”
