Oxford 5, Afton 3

OXFORD – Oxford avenged an early-season loss to Afton, and won its fifth straight game over a seven-day period.

Oxford (7-4), now a game ahead in MAC’s Division II, scored three runs in the fifth to surge in front. At the bottom of the batting order, Derrick Head, Jamie Smolcnop, and John Corbett had singles, Corbett’s driving in a run. P.J. Hubman had an RBI single to tie the game, and Tom Gould plated the go-ahead run with a single.

Afton loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings, but managed just run, that coming after an error.

Starting pitcher Kyle Ferrington fanned Afton’s batter for the last out of the sixth, and reliever P.J. Hubman got the last two outs of the game on a strikeout and a groundout.

“The bottom of the order was huge for us tonight, that and Kyle’s pitching,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “It’s been a huge week for us and we’re in the best spot (first-place) right now. Still, we have to continue to play good baseball.”

Derrick Head went 3-for-3 with two doubles, Smolcnop was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Chris Covey was 2-for-2.

Tyler Lawrence had two hits for Afton (10-2), and Jake Arnold had a two-run single in the fourth.

Greene 6, Sidney 0

GREENE – Greene put itself in commanding position as the MAC Division One front-runner beating Sidney for the second time this season.

The win gives Greene a two-game division lead over the Warriors, who kept the Trojans from winning division titles the past two seasons.

“Last year we lost to them in a division tiebreaker, and two years ago, they beat us in the last game when we had a chance to clinch the division,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “This win was huge and we had a nice crowd to support us. We haven’t clinched the division title yet, but one of our goals this year was to sweep Sidney.”

Greene broke through against Sidney starter, Dani Gravel, with two runs in the third. Erin Smith scored Tara Bub with an RBI fielder’s choice. “That inning opened things up for us,” Smith said. “We started to make a lot of contact and make their defense play the ball.”

Stephanie Stahl came off the bench to rip a two-run double in the sixth. Reserve Rachel Turner also turned in a basehit and run scored. Emily Pierce and Alyssa David contributed single RBIs.

The Trojans improved to 6-0 in division play and 11-2 overall. Caitlin Willis finished 2-for-3 at the plate, and winning pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan struck out 14 and allowed just one Sidney hit.
