Moon pitches Norwich to first victory

Norwich 9, Seton Catholic Central 1

NORWICH – Norwich avenged a weekend loss to the Saints getting a complete-game three-hit victory from senior pitcher Mike Moon, and also won for the first time in six outings this season.

“Mike has improved tremendously the past two seasons, and he has great control of his fastball and change-up,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “His pitching was tremendous, and our defense did not make any fielding errors.”

Moon finished with seven strikeouts and one walk in holding a Seton club that scored 12 runs in a five-run victory over NHS last Saturday.

Oxford 13, Hancock 6

OXFORD – Oxford leveled its season log taking advantage of Hancock’s mistakes in Monday’s MAC divisional contest.

Tom Gould, Eddie Grundner, and Brett Trask all finished with two hits and three RBI for Oxford (4-4). Trask clipped a two-run triple in the sixth to up the Blackhawks’ lead to seven runs.

“They threatened a lot and I didn’t feel comfortable, even after we scored five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “A seven-run lead might not be enough the way they were hitting.”

Trask came on to pitch a scoreless seventh to support winning pitcher P.J. Hubman.

Sherburne-Earlville 7, Cooperstown 1

COOPERSTOWN – Sherburne-Earlville became the first team to not only defeat Cooperstown, but score a run on the Redskins in Monday’s game at Doubleday Field.

Caleb Brown pitched a complete-game victory striking out seven and not walking a batter. Nate Kline had two hits including a three-run double in the fifth with two outs. “We had timely hitting and just put the ball in play,” said S-E skipper Brian Hicks. “This game tells us we are right where we should be. Early in the season, we had a couple losses where the ball just didn’t bounce our way.”

Mike Doscher added two hits and two RBI, and Stephen Buddenhagen finished with two hits to aid the S-E effort.

The Marauders (5-3) play at Canastota today.

G-MU 13, Morris 1

MORRIS – G-MU evened its Tri-Valley League record and scored the game’s final 13 runs after trailing in the first inning.

Three errors and a Chris Lanza RBI basehit keyed a seven-run second inning for the Raiders (1-1, 3-2). Brendan Zucchi added one of his two basehits in the frame to lead the Raiders’ batsmen.

“Most of our runs came in on errors, but we hit the ball and made them make plays,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson.

Tyler Wildfeir struck out eight, allowed one hit, and needed only 87 pitches for a complete-game victory. He was aided by a defense that finished with 10 assisted plays.

G-MU hosts Downsville today.

Walton 18, Greene 12

GREENE – Seventeen basehits were not enough for Greene to overcome 10 base on balls and five errors as the Trojans dropped their third straight game.

Chris Mead had three hits for Walton to go with four runs scored and two RBI.

Scott Gorton went 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI to lead Greene, while Nic Puglisi had three hits and three RBI. Nate Whittaker, Dan Carlin, and Dave Fors all pitched in with a pair of hits.

“Both pitchers had to thread the needle with the strike zone,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “When you have to throw the ball down the middle, both teams have too many good hitters. Both teams hit the ball well – it was a real slugfest.”

Greene (4-4-1) plays at Delhi Wednesday.
