Oxford Cruises After Fast Start

OXFORD – Oxford started quickly building an early 16-4 lead, and cruised to its second win of the season.

Tom Gould had 15 points and eight rebounds, Alex Champlin posted a double-double with 14 markers and 10 boards, and Cory Seiler tacked on 10 points.

“We were able to run the floor well and got out to a pretty good lead,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “We went into a little funk against their zone, but we continued to play good defense and rebound well.”

According to Davis’ statistics, Oxford held a 32-10 rebounding edge. The Blackhawks (2-1) play at Delhi Friday.

Girls’ Basketball

Canastota 47, S-E 34

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville battled back from a 12-point halftime deficit to take a one-point lead early in the fourth, but struggled at consistent offense in a loss to Canastota Monday.

Bridget Irwin’s three-point play with about six minutes left in the fourth quarter gave S-E (1-1) its lone lead of the second half. Canastota made hay down the stretch at the foul line pulling away with 12-for-19 shooting. “They’re a good team and their zone gave us some trouble. We made a lot of unforced turnovers,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “Our defense definitely got us back into the game, but we didn’t make enough shots.”

Irwin scored nine points to lead S-E, who host Westhill Friday at 7:45 p.m.
