Arts Council announces new performance series

NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts in Norwich announces its ninth subscription performance series lineup as well as a new chamber music series.

Jazz Knights

The season will begin on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. with a free performance by the United States Military Academy Band’s Jazz Knights.

For over 30 years the Jazz Knights have brought musical excellence and variety to their audiences by presenting the best of big band jazz and popular music. Members of the group are graduates of America’s finest music schools. They are recruited and selected through a competitive audition process specifically for service in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. Members of the band have played with such jazz icons as Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Ahmad Jamal and the Glenn Miller Band.

Altar Boyz

On Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., Altar Boyz rolls into town. Altar Boyz is a musical comedy spoof about a fictitious Christian boy-band on the last night of their national “Raise the Praise” tour. With their sweet harmonies, sinfully spectacular dancing and an unnerving sense of fashion, Altar Boyz are destined to rock the masses! A musical for the entire family, Altar Boyz is 90 minutes of pure fun and the winner of the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. The performance is sponsored by NBT Bank.

New Orleans Jazz Orchestra

It will be a very special holiday performance this year when Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra All Stars bring “Home for the Holidays” on Dec. 14. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra was incorporated in December 2002 by founder and artistic director Irvin Mayfield, the Grammy nominated, Billboard Award winning trumpeter and composer and the officially appointed Cultural Ambassador the City of New Orleans. NOJO is a spirited, swinging band steeped in the tradition of New Orleans jazz, blues, swing and spirituals. NOJO performs programs that draw upon the rich musical and cultural traditions of New Orleans the is the premier major performing and presenting jazz institution based in post-Katrina New Orleans. This performance is sponsored by Kerry Bio-Science.

Stig Rossen

Sunday, Feb. 15 brings international singing sensation Stig Rossen and his orchestra to Norwich. Known in the U.S. for his PBS special and voicing Disney characters in “Mulan”, Mulan 2” and “Lilo & Stitch”, Danish born Stig Rossen has performed around the world as a concert artist, recorded nine albums and has performed the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables 1500 times in 10 different countries. A wonderful way to warm up a cold winter’s night, Stig and his orchestra will bring you to your feet with lush vocals and beautiful orchestrations.

Barrage
