NORWICH –A man charged with manslaughter in the death of an infant in Pitcher was back in court last week to withdraw his guilty plea and get new counsel.

Jason Allen Sherman, 5223 Piety Hill Rd., Pitcher, is being held in the Wyoming Correctional Facility without bail on separate charges.

In Chenango County, the defendant faces charges of first degree manslaughter and second degree assault, both felonies in connection with the death of 16-month-old Marshall Lee Barber Jr., Pitcher, the son of his-live-in girlfiend.

After an investigation, the case was ruled a homicide. Sherman was arrested and indicted.

More facts of the case were divulged since that time, including the defendant’s prior criminal history. Law enforcement personnel, when taking the stand in court, revealed that the defendant had a past charge of attempted murder and rape of a three-year-old girl in Louisiana.

Sherman was originally scheduled to appear in Chenango County Court June 27, but after a change in the court’s calendar, he appeared on Wednesday before Supreme Court Justice Kevin M. Dowd.
