Marauders drop first league game of season

Softball

Canastota 3, Sherburne-Earlville 0

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville was unable to capitalize on its meager scoring opportunities, and lost its first division game of the season Wednesday to Canastota.

After failing to score with runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, Canastota broke through against S-E starter Lindsay Hodges in the fifth. Alicia Hibbard and Elaine Peters connected for RBI singles – the only runs needed for winning pitcher Liz McGinley.

S-E put runners on the corners in the third and sixth innings – the former with just one out. Those were the only two innings it had a runner on third base. “I’d rather have a game like this at this point of the season rather than when it gets down to the wire,” said S-E coach Scott Fitzpatrick. “Now we have to go up there and beat them later this year.”

Unadilla Valley 6, Walton 2

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley won back-to-back league games for the first time this season beating Walton Wednesday.

Tied at 2-2 in the sixth, Amanda Button made a difficult over-the-shoulder catch in right field to rob Walton’s Holly Reynolds of a sure-fire home run. The Storm came back to score four runs in the bottom half the frame. Breanne White broke the tie with an RBI single, and Sarah Talbot completed a 3-for-3 day with another RBI single. Kristen Elliott had two hits and Kara Collins two hits and one ribbie.

“We had a lot of big defensive plays today,” said UV coach Eileen Lawyer. “Kristen (Elliott, UV pitcher) only had two strikeouts, so we had to make all the plays in the field behind her.”

UV (4-3, 5-6) hosts Greene Monday.

S-E 10, Canastota 3 (6 innings)

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville won a big division game over Canastota, but likely lost senior captain Nolan Fuller for the season.

Fuller was hit on the jaw with a first-inning pitch, and left the game to receive off-site medical treatment. The Marauders regrouped to score three in the first and four more in the second to take command. “That’s a big loss for us (the injury), and the kids were flat after that,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “I was proud that the kids were able to focus and pick it back up.”

Caleb Brown pitched four innings for the win striking out nine. He also had a two-run single as part of S-E’s second inning. Mike McCredy had a two-run single in the first, and Ethan Sconzo had three runs scored and four stolen bases.

Walton 16, Unadilla Valley 5

NEW BERLIN – Walton’s eight-run second inning allowed it to open a big lead over host Unadilla Valley in Wednesday’s road romp.

Following two walks, Walton had four straight singles – all driving in runs – to open the flood gates. Patrick O’Brien led Walton with three hits, and number nine hitter Phil Hanley added a two-run homer in the fourth.

Unadilla Valley (3-8) plays at Greene Monday.
