Norwich 81, Whitney Point 30
NORWICH – Norwich put the brakes on a recent two-game slide Wednesday night using two big runs in the first half to jet away from visiting Whitney Point. The victory was also number 10 on the season for the Tornado, who are off the next nine days.
“One of our goals each season is to get double figures wins,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “Hopefully we can build on this.”
Leading just 8-7 midway through the first quarter, the Tornado (10-3) scored the final 14 points of the stanza starting with Chris Mattingly’s fast-break layup, and ending with Tim Clark’s driving hoop just before the buzzer. In between, Norwich scored in a variety of ways, and all were high percentage looks at the basket.
The winless Golden Eagles scored four points early in the second quarter, and that preceded a 17-point spurt for NHS. Six different players scored during the second-quarter salvo, and Craig Berg connected on six points. By halftime, Norwich was up 29 points. “One thing we wanted to do was get off to an early lead,” Abbott said. “We knew Whitney Point was down this year, and we didn’t want them to hang around and gain some confidence at our expense.”
Vaughn Labor led four Norwich players in double figures scoring 15 points. Nate Foote had 13, Berg 12, and Patrick Coates 11.

BAINBRIDGE – Chris McGinnis is going out a winner on his home floor. Playing his final home game before a scheduled knee surgery Monday, McGinnis scored 18 points to lead four Bobcats in double figures.
“They (the team) really picked it up for (Chris),” said B-G coach Ben Nelson. “Chris has been a good leader for everybody in sports and in school. The team was kind of paying tribute to him.”
Travis Dickey and Ricky Marjorum scored nine points apiece in the fourth quarter, and McGinnis had six in a 31-point stanza, the best quarter for the Bobcats this season. “In the fourth quarter we pressed, and were able to get a lot of steals and layups,” Nelson said.
Marjorum finished with 15 points and five assists, Tim Feyerabend totaled 14 points and 10 boards, while Dickey netted 12.

Greene 51, Walton 29
WALTON – Walton lived by the three-pointer in the first half, but eventually Greene took control in the second half to remain unbeaten (4-0, 11-2) in Midstate Athletic Conference play.
Holly Reynolds had four three balls in the first half – three in the first quarter – and all five Walton field goals in the opening two quarters were of the three-point variety. Still, Greene maintained a six-point lead keyed by Barb Borst’s nine points. “We just tried to close out on Reynolds and pay more attention to her,” said Greene coach Bill Case of his halftime adjustment. “We figured if we kept playing our game, our shots would start to fall. It was a consistent effort the whole game.”
Lizzy Buhl had her best overall game of the season. She scored eight points in the second half to finish with 12 markers, 13 rebounds, and three blocked shots. She was 6-for-7 from the field, and seven of her rebounds came on the offensive end. Borst racked up a game-high 16 points and three steals, while Megan McDermott scored 12 points
