Windsor uses fast start to breeze past Tornado

Windsor 52, Norwich 40

NORWICH – Norwich was unable to overcome Windsor’s fast start in which it built a 15-point lead in Saturday’s matchup.

It was the second straight contest the Tornado fell behind by double digits. The Black Knights led 23-8 at the first turn that included a 12-0 start to the contest.

Anne Buchert and Rachael Lamantia had eight points apiece in the first quarter to pace the Black Knights.

The Tornado were as close as 26-18 before Windsor scored the final six points of the half. Krissie Collier had nine points for the Tornado. “They usually don’t make too many threes, but they made four in this game,” said Norwich coach Krista Porter. “We were consistent with our scoring throughout the game, but just couldn’t make a run.”

Norwich plays at Whitney Point Tuesday.

COPES CORNERS – G-MU won its second straight Tri-Valley League game pulling away from Worcester in the third quarter.

Brianna Kenyon hit all four of her three-pointers in the first half for the Wolverines helping her club take an 18-12 lead at halftime

Cass Calamia and Ashlea Osborne fueled the Raiders’ comeback scoring six and five points respectively in the third to turn the deficit into a six-point lead. Sierra French made 3-for-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to pad the advantage. “This was a win we hoped to get, but after the first half we were a little concerned,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “In the second half, we came out and shot it well, passed it well, and didn’t turn it over.”

The Raiders (6-7) visit Cherry Valley-Springfield Wednesday.

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford’s winning streak reached nine games Friday night in a rout of visiting Hancock.

Liz Holbert scored 10 points in the opening quarter leading the Bobcats to a 22-4 lead. Holbert was 7-for-8 from the field to finish with 14 points.

Mariah Schaffer posted a 15-point, nine-assist night, and Dani Conway had 10 points and five assists.

Oxford 62, Harpursville 59

OXFORD – Erin Law broke out of a scoring slump in a big way leading Oxford past Harpursville Friday night.

Law, with three total points in the three previous games, had a career-high 16 points including three three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Law’s last trifecta with 1:27 remaining moved Oxford in front for good at 54-53. Felicia Tynan and Hollyann Branham added a pair of free throws in the final 23 seconds to seal the victory.

Harpursville made up an 11-point halftime deficit holding Oxford to just four points in the third quarter. Alycia Kimmel hit 15 of her 21 points in the second half including a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. Marisa Wickham’s offensive rebound putback with 1:54 remaining gave Harpursville its only lead of the game at 53-51.

Haley Witchella came off the bench for Oxford to score 16 points and grab 13 rebounds. Tynan had a team-high six assists, while Law and Branham led with five steals apiece.
