NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley ended a 15-game losing streak dating back to late-December of last season blowing away Deposit in the second half.

Sally Hartwick and Katrina Benson had six points apiece in the third quarter in which the Storm outscored the Lumberjacks 23-3. Through two quarters, UV (1-3) clung to a 21-19 lead. “We stayed in man defense and we were able to get a lot of easy baskets off turnovers,” said Storm first-year coach Brandi Backus of the second half.

Hartwick scored her points off the bench, and a number of UV bench players made solid contributions. “It showed tonight that we can put our bench players in and not lose anything,” Backus said.

Sarah Talbot scored a varsity-high 11 points to lead the Storm. Four other UV players had at least seven points.

UV plays at Afton Friday at 6 p.m.

GREENE – Coming off a tough loss last weekend in the Pennsyaver tourney finals and facing an unbeaten foe, the Trojans were more than up to the challenge in a victory over previously-unbeaten Crimson Knights.

Seven of the Trojans’ nine players scored in the second quarter, and that same number of players reached the scoring column in the third quarter. Greene put 55 points on the board through three quarters and had the game well in hand at that point.

“We talked after the loss, and even though we lost a game, it did not mean we were a weak team,” said Greene coach Bill Case. “We played better tonight, and the big key was our rebounding.”

Lizzy Buhl, although plagued with foul trouble early, had 12 rebounds, and Megan McDermott grabbed nine boards, pocketed five steals, and led the Trojans with 16 points. Barb Borst tacked on 13 points and Liz Wentlent added 10. “We had to back off of our press early because they were breaking it successfully and scoring,” Case said. “We went to a zone and did really well with that. Plus, we continued to score.”

Dani Conway, held to two points through three quarters, scored 16 in the last stanza including four foul shots in the last two minutes help her club overcome a six-point shortfall entering the last quarter.
