Greene rolls with offensive barrage

Greene 5, Windsor 0

WINDSOR – After a quiet first half steeped in defensive adjustments, the Trojans stung Windsor’s goal with a barrage of tallies to improve to 3-1 on the season.

With captain and center back Mary Rutz out with an injury, the Trojans spent the better part of the first half re-positioning players at new spots, said head coach Sue Carlin. “The first half reflected our adjustments on defense, and we were a little sluggish,” she said. “The second half we started to make connections and the defense was playing well together.”

Andrea Day had her third straight two-goal game, and she scored just 1:20 into the second half to break a scoreless tie. Christine Conroe scored less than two minutes later, and Amy David had the third of five Greene goals at 19 minutes.

Greene plays at Whitney Point Tuesday.

Greene 1, Sidney 0

SIDNEY – April Small’s crossing pass to Megan McDermott went untouched finding the side netting with 1:39 left in the second overtime to give Greene a win overtime Wednesday.

McDermott collided with the Sidney goalie in an effort to touch the ball in, and somehow the ball made it through, said Greene coach Randy Smith, whose club improved to 6-0. “It was a great soccer game and both teams played well,” Smith said. “Sidney is missing its leading scorer (Stephanie Meno), but they hustled and played hard. I was giving in to the idea it would be a scoreless tie until that final play.”

Liz Wentlent made five saves, two of which were key goal-savers with one hand, Smith said, to preserve the shutout.
